About This Harp

Rare rebuild of a 44-string double-action harp made by J. C. Schwieso & Co in approximately 1840, serial no. 824. Schwieso used to be a foreman for Sebastien Erard, and started up his own harp-making business in London in 1815. The harp was rebuilt by the notable harp-maker Wilfred Smith during which the mechanism was also cleaned and reassembled. The rebuilt harp has a straightforward, minimally ornate style. The harp has been restrung with light gut and wire strings. The sound is well balanced and bright, as befits its new look. The harp was serviced by Niebisch & Tree in July 2026. They noted that the harp has been completely rebuilt around the original mechanism and appeared structurally sound. The pedal action has some wear commensurate with age, which might limit quick pedaling. The harp regulated surprisingly well and on a par with modern harps. They thought the harp would be well suited to a young harpist or other beginner. The harp comes with a tuning key and a set of velour and canvas covers.
